Samsung unwraps GX-20 DSLR, new compacts

Samsung today became the latest in a series of camera makers to update their lines for the PMA photography show next week. At the top of the line, the GX-20 digital SLR is a close cousin to the similarly new Pentax K20D but with key differences; while it shares the same 14.6-megapixel, low-noise CMOS camera sensor as the K20D, the GX-20 includes a different on-camera interface and generates JPEG images differently than its Pentax sibling. The Samsung unit's physical design is also different and sports a dedicated RAW shooting button that produces an uncompressed shot even when the camera is normally set to JPEG mode.

The GX-20 also boasts optical image stabilization and a dust removal system that works both actively through a shaking system and passively through a dust-repellant coating.

Perry, small lakes are hot spots for fishing

Most of the fish we have are fairly small as we sampled about 2,300 fish and only about 10 percent of those were legal fish over 10 inches and those were pretty nice fish."

Tjelmeland said some of the best crappie fishing is happening right now at Perry.

"Those fish are schooled up right after the ice comes off and they're usually hanging in 12-18 feet of water in some kind of brush and as it warms up in the spring they move towards the bank and think about spawning."

The crappie spawn can make a lot of fish accessible to shoreline anglers making it a favorite time of the year to fish. Rocky rip-rap and shoreline brush piles are great places to target.

"Last year it was nice and the fish moved up early and during the first part of March there were guys catching them in 4-6 feet of water," Tjelmeland said of the pre-spawn pattern.

Hank and Tex in the house

Sure, they could have them in Atlanta, but abundant sunshine, golf and private jets make this quick trip south a pretty attractive option for a meeting space.

Teixeira is signing autographs as I write this, as about half of the fans in attendance at this morning workout scrambled for a place in line next to the dugout as soon as they saw the first baseman emerge.

Anyway, there's no update whatsoever on a possible Teixeira contract extension. Braves aren't talking about it, and neither is agent Scott Boras. And by the way, Teixeira laughed when I asked him about the rumored rift between him and Boras.

"Scott and I have a great relationship," he said. "We talk about once a week."

And one other thing: Teixeira is not building a house in Atlanta.

Take it step by step

If you're going to stay in Atlanta for the next five years, it probably makes sense to buy. You'll build equity, establish a good credit history and get that big interest deduction for your income taxes.

- 2. On the downside, you have to take care of all your own maintenance and improvements, so you have to be able to cover not just the monthly mortgage payment but insurance and repairs and upkeep.

- 3. If you've got a great low rent deal, or you think you might get laid off or relocated in the near future, it might be better to continue to rent. If your credit is really bad, you should probably wait until you can get it improved so you'll have a much better mortgage deal.

Granholm urges quick end to texting scandal: 'It's bad for our image'

City mulls appeal of order to release secret files Paul Egan and Christine MacDonald / The Detroit News

DETROIT -- Gov. Jennifer Granholm said Thursday the text messaging scandal involving Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is "bad for the city, it's bad for the state, it's bad for our image."

"This is why I hope that whatever happens happens quickly, so that we can move and turn the page," Granholm said in an interview on WXYZ-Action News. "There's so much work we've got to do. There's such great momentum in the city. So we need to keep that going and work to keep that going because there's work to do."

Asked if she believes Kilpatrick can survive politically, the governor said: "I don't know. I don't know. He's got that information. I have no idea what's in the documents.
