| JVC GR-D750
The final word: The GR-D750 is a solid little performer that punches well above its weight; offering impressive image quality for entry-level users. If you're on the lookout for a cheap miniDV camera, you could certainly do a lot worse than this. ON PAPER at least, the GR-D750 is the unmistakable runt of the JVC litter. With its low image resolution, rudimentary feature set and cheap looking design, we certainly weren't expecting much; yet it turns out that looks can be very deceiving. From its attractive price tag to its above average video performance, this is one of the best budget offerings we've seen in quite a while. It represents excellent value for money and is a perfect introduction to digital video - provided you can live without the bells and whistles. The GR-D750 is a standard-definition camcorder that records video to miniDV tapes.
Update: Library Has 10 Copies of "Water for Elephants"
No Zags: Candidate endorsement is one of the most antiquated and soon-to-be-extinct functions of the newspaper industry. In a world where anybody can publish any opinion they want and anyone can read it, it seems pretty silly that the "wise old minds" of an editorial board still feel the need to put a newspaper's stamp of approval on a political position. Endorsements are relics of the old-journalism past, as are editorials. Question: I'm curious about the last sentence of No Zags' comment. Are editorials, indeed, relics. Or are the still important contributions to the public dialogue -- and help form community opinion? .
Britney Spears
Sam Lutfi was finally served the restraining order yesterday that effectively requires him to stay 250 feet from Britney Spears and have no contact with her whatsoever. The restraining order was set to expire today, but the judge in the case extended it to March 17, according to the AP: In court papers, Jeffrey Wexler, an attorney for her father, James Spears, wrote that "after three weeks of apparently evading service," Lutfi was served at 11 a.m. outside his Los Angeles apartment. The order, which requires Lutfi to stay 250 yards away from Spears and her home, was set to expire Friday. Wexler had asked for the order to be extended. Poor Sam Lutfi. He must miss Britney Spears. I bet he walks in on random pap smears just to remember the good times. Surprisingly none of the women really cared until Sam started throwing Cheetos at them and screaming "Where's the checkbook?! I'll feed you to Satan!" Then it got a little weird.
VIDEO from Medialink and AXA Equitable: Turning the Big 4-0 Ranks #1
NEW YORK, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Milestone birthdays, children, marriage, and advice from friends or relatives top the list of reasons why Americans begin saving for retirement. According to the 2008 AXA Retirement Scope Survey, turning 40 is the number one life trigger for most to start saving. Today's working Americans note more factors prompting their decision to save than past generations of retirees. (See video from AXA Equitable at: http://media.medialink.com/WebNR.aspx?story=34446) The survey also reports that people realize it's up to the individual to plan for their retirement. Social Security is something that most people can't rely on to provide a significant portion of their retirement income. When it comes to retirement planning, figuring out what to do, how to do it and when to do it can be confusing, and working with a professional advisor or planner is key.
Gameloft S.A. Chess & Backgammon Classics
On the flip side, Gameloft's tutorial doesn't do a great job of actually explaining backgammon to novices, so first-time players may never find themselves immersed enough to continue playing. Play modes aside, the most significant addition to both Chess Classics and Backgammon Classics is Gameloft's three-dimensional graphics engine, which offers a surprising amount of user viewing customization. First, each game presents its board from a standard forced 3-D perspective, providing you with the option to instead view it from a traditional overhead 2-D vantage point if you prefer. But if you stick to 3-D, you're actually able to rotate the board to your choice of angles on a static plane—it can't be tilted—and you'll see major differences depending on which of many themed skins you pick for the board, its pieces, and the background.
Panasonic camera addresses need for AA solution
While most camera buyers are looking for rechargeable lithium ion battery packs there is a niche for the simple AA solution and Panasonic is addressing this with its new point-and-shoot DMC-LS80. We've had a little camera that just ran on AA batteries and it had its uses when we were roughing it with no electricity nearby and no solar solution set up. This entry-level model has a three times optical zoom with 8.1 megapixel resolution and such features as an optical image stabilizer to compensate for those wobbly fingers, intelligent ISO that determines whether or not the subject is moving and adjusts the ISO and setting and shutter speed accordingly, an auto macro feature that makes the switch to macro on its own for those close-up shots and a quick auto focus. Useful features that will make the beginner feel that much more capable behind the camera.
