No more crappy cell phone camera pictures if Kodak has its way

Today the company rolled out new chips that promise to make even the smallest cameras take better, more detailed photos.

Kodak says its KAC-05020 Image Sensor is a 1.4 micron, 5-megapixel device that allows capture of high quality images in small cameras, with resolution that equals what is available from current devices using larger, 1.75 micron pixel CMOS designs.

Kodak said unlike other small-pixel sensors which can produce poor images, especially under low light conditions, the 1.4 micron pixel used in the KAC-05020 Image Sensor changes this convention, providing image quality that can equal or surpass what is available from current 1.75 micron-based devices.Light sensitivity in the new sensor is enhanced by using the company's Truesense Color Filter Pattern technology, which adds panchromatic, or "clear," pixels to the red, green and blue pixels already on the sensor.

Fuji's new cameras: 18x zoom, blog-mode, Panorama

The advanced FinePix S100FS (Film Simulation) digital camera provides an all-in-one solution with manual controls and functionality of a Digital-SLR, including both digital and manual stabilization through a mechanically stabilized "floating" lens element to reduce blur from the photographer's hand-shake, with Fujifilm's Picture Stabilization Technology, to reduce blur caused by subject movement.

The S100FS also features a 14.3x Fujinon manual zoom lens, an 8th generation Super CCD sensor with 11MP of resolution, a 2.5" tiltable LCD and ISO speeds up to ISO 6400 at 6MP and up to ISO 10,000 at 3MP. Bolstered by Fuji's Face Detection 2.0 Technology with Automatic Red Eye Removal, the camera's lens design can achieve maximum resolution at all focal lengths of 28mm-400mm equivalent and all aperture stop settings, according to the company.

Obama faces fire from Clinton, McCain

In what could be a preview of the general election, the two exchanged jabs over Iraq and the economy, sure to be key issues in November.

McCain criticized the Democrats for speaking in "platitudes" about Iraq.

"The Democrats wanted to leave and set a date for withdrawal and said we could never succeed militarily. Look at the record ... not the rhetoric, not the platitudes, but the principles and the philosophy," he said.

McCain later took aim directly at Obama for lacking specifics.

"I respect him and the campaign he has run," McCain said.

"But there is going to be time when we have to get into specifics, and I have heard not every speech he has given obviously, but they are singularly lacking in specifics, and that's when as the campaign moves forward, we will be portraying very stark differences."

Those comments are among McCain's most pointed attack at Obama to date, a clear sign the Republican nominee apparent is increasingly viewing the Illinois senator as the Democratic front-runner.

Next-gen mobiles: a computer in every pocket

Sony Ericsson has launched two new handsets, and it's a struggle to choose between them. The most eye-catching is certainly the Xperia X1e, with its full slide-out keyboard, GPS, Wi-Fi and styling that might yet give the iPhone a run for its money.

Kosovo marks first week of independence

Every night that we lie in bed we don't know in the morning what is going to happen," said Jovanka Petrovic, among Sunday worshippers at Gracanica's Orthodox church.

"There is no more Serbia. We have lost everything," said Ana Ivanovic, another worshipper.

But ethnic Albanians exulted in their independence and held out hope that the unrest and uncertainty would subside.

"People keep celebrating every night," Artan Dedushaj said. "This is something that all Albanians have waited centuries for - and changes will come soon."

What is it about the old-fashioned Polaroid camera that holds such sway in this megapixel age?

It's a decidedly lo-fi tool of the photographic trade, a kitschy relic of the Ford-era photo album. If you were born between 1970 and 1980, there's a decent chance your first photograph was taken on Polaroid film.

Sadly, the days of the Polaroid instant photo are winding to a close.

Polaroid announced last week it would stop making instant film, and expects to run out of stock completely by 2009. The company will now focus on digital cameras, printers and televisions.
