Apple’s new baby has Microsoft feeling radio ga ga

Google's aspirations to gain a foothold on the small screen hardly stop there, with the search engine showing off its Android mobile phone system in Barcelona this week. Perhaps this explains why Microsoft wants to buy Yahoo!, which runs searches on a few mobiles, although one could say the $42 billion (£21 billion) might be better spent pursuing RIM or a mobile maker.

All of which leads back, not all that obviously, to GCap Media, the home of Classic FM. Why bother to get up from the sofa to turn on that expensive, retro-styled DAB radio to listen to Birdsong when it would be a lot easier to press a Classic FM buttton on an iPhone?

Internet transmission uses global standards while DAB is confined largely to one country, which British media executives and policymakers arrogantly believed would be followed by a grateful world.

It's a party

Step on back through the looking glass. On your side of the mirror, maybe it makes sense that the AME churches and NAACP are racists against themselves, but not over here in the real world. Time to start using a smaller crack pipe, Robert in Hinesville.

Live From Macworld: Slick Podcasting, Tricked-Out Tablet, Awesome ...

Just stick a microphone in your computer, start up a recording program, and put the sound file online. There, now you're a podcaster.

However, iTunes makes it easy to find and organize podcasts for listeners and creators alike. This summer, Belkin will release Podcaststudio, a two-channel recording unit with an iPod dock that fits classic and nano models. It features a lot of different input options: combo jacks, 3.5 mm or its built-in set of stereo mics.

One possible disadvantage, though, is an odd shape that makes it look like it would be a little awkward to stuff into a pocket, so those looking for a simple and easily portable voice recorder may want to look elsewhere.

That same shape, though, makes it look like a good option for meetings or any other sort of desktop use.

HP Photosmart C7180 multifunction printer

The HP Photosmart C7180 is a six-ink, all-in-one photo inkjet printer with built-in scanner, copier, and fax machine. With just about every imaginable connection option and feature, the C7180 isn't designed for bargain hunters, but it is a good choice for users who want a plethora of features in one box.

Setup

The C7180's streamlined design makes this unit very user-friendly right out of the box. Memory card readers supporting most types of digital camera cards are conveniently located on the unit's right-hand corner near the paper tray. Copying, scanning, faxing, and photo-printing functions are within arm's reach on the C7180's sleekly designed control panel, and menus are easy to navigate and read thanks to the large 3.6-inch LCD.

When setting up the printer, one of the first decisions you'll face is choosing from the myriad connection options.

Christie invite 'a mistake'

Former sprinter Linford Christie will not take part in a relay carrying the Olympic torch through London, it has been confirmed.

Christie received a letter from London Mayor Ken Livingstone inviting him to take part in April's torch procession, but a spokesman for the Mayor said it had been sent by mistake.

The Mayor's spokesman said: "The decision to invite Linford Christie to be a torchbearer was not taken by the Mayor. The decision to invite Linford Christie was taken by officials and was a mistake."

The 47-year-old has a lifetime Olympic ban after testing positive for the steroid nandrolone in 1999, and international Olympic officials condemned the decision to invite him to the torch event.

Christie, who won gold in the 100m at the 1992 Barcelona games and has always denied taking the banned drug, was sent the letter "as a formality", the spokesman said.

DHS grads put video skills to work for trinity of sport teams

If anyone had told 20-year-old Jared Rita in high school that he would be attending Super Bowl XLII, staying in the same hotel as the New England Patriots and working with the video crew on the sidelines, he might have laughed. But the 2005 graduate of Dartmouth High School will find himself doing just this Sunday.

Jonathan Gotlib, 21 — Jared's best friend and fellow '05 DHS graduate — has also been enjoying some pretty remarkable company lately. He's been at the TD Banknorth Garden filming Celtics and Bruins games, just feet away from the athletes he used to watch from the other side of the camera on television.
