Brown fails to back Alexander’s tax power bid

Last night, Angus Robertson, the SNP's leader at Westminster, claimed that the Prime Minister had made a gaffe at his monthly press conference, arguing that Mr Brown had "asserted that London rule was the preference in Scotland".

"Having lost the Scottish Parliament elections, Gordon Brown still doesn't seem to realise that people in Scotland want more decisions taken closer to home," declared the Moray MP.

"The majority of Scots voted in 2007 for parties committed to increasing the powers of the Scottish Parliament. Labour has been the last party to formally recognise the demand for further powers but they still don't trust the people to decide."

Mr Robertson added: "The SNP believes the people should have the choice and we are confident, with the rising support for independence, that Scotland will choose independence."

GDC to become invitation only for press in '09

It can be hard if you're a writer who isn't with one of the larger sites like IGN or one of the more popular blogs like Joystiq: E3's going invitation-only last year meant many gaming writers were scrambling for their golden ticket, and the show had a much different feel from previous E3s Ars has attended. Last year the Game Developers Conference picked up the slack in many ways, but with so many stories coming out of the GDC, and so many press members there, were the actual developers able to do their job without being harassed by the press? During our interview with GDC Executive Director Jamil Moledina, we asked this questions, among others.

Moledina agreed that the press presence at GDC had been growing. "At GDC '07, there were around 1,000 press passes handed out, which for a 16,000-person show is quite a lot," he told Ars.

Outta the box

I discovered Jonathan Milo Leal's sauces several years ago and was impressed with the products, from their packaging to their contents. I still am.

The latest additions to Leal's line deliver. The new varieties of sauces are roasted garlic Chianti and four herb Malbec marinara.

You want taste? They have it. You want fresh? They are. You want texture, good color, great taste? It's all there.

Definitely designed for the garlic lover, the roasted garlic Chianti sauce is a bold, flavorful sauce with a heady bouquet.

Ingredients include Chianti, fresh basil and parsely, and diced tomatoes. There is no added sugar or salt.

A chunky substantial sauce, the sauce is great on pasta, as a sauce for homemade pizza or atop bruschetta.

Customized Online Support Services From SupportSpace Soothes Post ...

The tech experts at SupportSpace, an online service dedicated to providing a new standard of tech support, refer to the month of January 2008 as the technology hangover days. A couple of aspirin and a good night's sleep took care of the eggnog, but what about all those new gadgets you now have to deal with?

Quick start guides and manuals are usually the first place consumers turn to when they can't find the on/off button or figure out how to install the batteries. After installing the measly memory card that comes with the camera and using up the few sheets of glossy paper that came with the printer, many people will be online visiting manufacturers' Web sites or user forums researching the 'how-to' sections for hours on end.

So what is the best cure for the nasty post-holiday technology hangover? With tech support from SupportSpace, consumers can directly access the Web's most robust community of independent, certified tech experts to get their holiday tech toys configured and up and running.

Eagleman 'Time Slowing' Experiment Invalidated

R&D engineer, technologist, and conceptual theorist Marshall Barnes has now published a digital article that completely invalidates the celebrated findings of Baylor College professor David M. Eagleman, showing the perception of time slowing down during a crisis event is a function of enhanced memory. First published in December of 2007 in the online journal PlosOne http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0001295 , the peer reviewed Does Time Really Slow Down During A Frightening Event? posited that anecdotal accounts of time slowing down for people during frightening events are simply a function of the brain recording the event in a richer, more detailed process, resulting in memories of things happening slower.

The response to the report across the Internet was mixed, even as media attention of the Eagleman report grew.

Review: This notebook is all business

My demo unit was running Windows Vista Business, which for some reason doesn't ship with the common Codecs needed to play DVDs. Only consumer editions of Vista do; I guess Microsoft figures business people don't need to play DVDs. I didn't discover this until onboard my transcon flight, which meant four hours reading the in-flight magazine instead of enjoying the hilarity that is Superbad. Once on the ground and on the Web, with some searching I was able to download the needed codecs from a third-party Web-site; Microsoft had wanted me to pay them for an upgrade instead

Woe is Vista

That's not my main Vista beef, however. That lies with their overzealous anti-piracy practices. When I first received the demo notebook I unpacked it, flipped it on and began the initial automated install.
